It’s simple to use:

1. After you initiate a Study Session on the Web, just go to your study settings, and choose ‘Reverse Study Mode’

2. You will then be presented with the Answer side first and prompted to ‘Reveal Question’

3. If you want to undo this setting, simply go back to the study settings and select ‘Standard Study Mode’

1-Move decks to a new class: this feature provides a more simplified option at the deck level for you to move your deck to any existing class in your library. You can also choose the exact location where you want the deck moved.

2-Mirror a deck to a new class: this feature allows you to have copies of a deck in multiple locations so that any changes made in any of the decks are reflected across ALL instances of that deck.

3-Mirror ALL of the decks in a class when duplicating the full class. This is a helpful feature if you need multiple instances of a class, and want to be able to make changes in one spot and have those changes reflected in all instances of the decks.

You are used to our confidence-based study algorithm which allows you to progressively move through your flashcards, rating each one, and ensuring the cards rated low repeat within minutes. This is spaced repetition and the heart of Brainscape at work, and the way that we help you successfully master your weaknesses.

Many of you have shared in our feature forum that you’d like a way to just get through your cards without spaced repetition. Until now, Browse Mode was the closest thing.

This is where Brainscape's Drill Mode can help.

Essentially, Drill Mode is a feature that you can use in a variety of ways:

1. A way to pre-rate a new flashcard deck;

2. A way to test yourself before a big exam;

3. A way to just study a subset of your flashcards (e.g. just the 1’s or the 2’s, etc)

How it works:

Click on the sparkle icon on the Question / Answer side of your flashcard (you may need to type a few characters to see it appear) and access specific prompts that will help you refine your flashcards.

• QUESTION side prompts: 

  • Simplify question → Rewrite the question to be shorter, clearer, and easier to understand, while preserving the original meaning.  Specifically, Simplify will shorten sentence structure, remove filler words, and keep only essential information.

  • Add hint (in footnote) → Create a subtle clue in the question footnote that guides the learner toward the answer without revealing it outright.

  • Turn Q into Q/A → Convert the provided text, in the question field, into a clear, self-contained question and a direct answer in flashcard format. If the answer is populated, it will ignore and overwrite it. 

  • Refine card→Rewrite the question and answer to be shorter, clearer, and easier to understand, while preserving the original meaning.  Specifically, Refine will reformat, rephrase, simplify, and emphasize key terms to improve readability and retention.

• ANSWER side prompts: 

  • Answer this card → Provide a clear, correct answer in the answer field based on the question text and any available context.

  • Simplify answer → Rewrite the answer to be shorter, clearer, and easier to understand, while preserving the original meaning.  Specifically, Simplify will shorten sentence structure, remove filler words, and keep only essential information.

In this most recently release, we have included the ability to copy or move cards within or to other decks & classes.

Once in the editor, you’ll have the ability to perform either function by clicking on the new copy / move icons located on the right side of the editor. This will take you to a picker allowing you to either copy or move the card to a deck (same or new) in your current class/deck or to a another deck in another class. The user may also use the picker to choose the position of the card.

1. Copy/Place Deck: essentially making a copy of an existing deck into another class. Read more here.

To access this, just click on the icon to the right of the metrics summary (Days Streak, Studied Today, and Average Studied/Day) under your profile. You’ll be taken to a metrics modal with all of your awesome study and creation stats.

Pro users can now paste supported images (jpg, png, and gif), including website screenshots, directly into their cards from the clipboard.

When an image is pasted (e.g. Cmd+V) while the cursor is inside a card, a prompt will appear, asking, “You pasted an image. Do you want to attach it?”, allowing you to paste the images into your card.

We just launched something that we think many of you will appreciate, especially if you’ve ever missed a day and thought, “Welp… there goes my streak.”

📅 Streak Revival lets Pro users restore their streak if they miss 1–2 days.

It’s a small change, but it’s grounded in the What the Hell Effect, a common habit-breaker in which missing one day leads to giving up entirely.

We’ve seen this happen often with our users (and ourselves). So, we built a way to fight it and help people stay motivated even when life gets messy.

(And if you want to atone for the missed day, you can always put in two short study sessions instead of one.)

👀 The best parts of our streak improvements:

• Revive a broken streak up to two days a month

• Personalized milestone messages as your streak grows

• Better reminders to avoid losing your streak in the first place

• A record of your longest streak ever, right in your metrics screen

In short, the mobile team has reacted to the feedback from many of our users wanting a speedier mobile editor. We’ve created a new experience that not only speeds up the creating and saving of flashcards, we’ve included a way to navigate the card list easily, and incorporate AI flashcard creation.

The team will continue to iterate on this design, and we look forward to any new feature suggestions you’d like to propose.

You can access the new features a few ways:

• If you click ‘Add Cards’ for a new deck, you will be taken to a modal that allows you to choose how you want to do this. You can choose a Manual path or an AI powered path.

• If you want to edit the cards in a deck, you can click the ‘pencil’ icon next to the deck you’d like to edit, and be taken to the editor, where you will be able to: Import/Paste flashcards, Summarize from Content, or Just Tell AI What I Want. Those new flashcards will be added to the current deck.

Keep in mind we are continually evolving our AI features and technologies, and not all file types are currently supported. BUT, we are working to add these in coming releases. This is how it works…on the class dashboard, you’ll now have a link for ‘Import / Paste Flashcards’.

Once you click on 'Import/Paste Flashcards', you will have two options, 

• Paste List: this is a text based field, where you can copy paste vocab and definitions, or any text you'd like converted into a flashcard.

• Upload a File:  this allows you to upload existing files that you have saved. You can currently upload a .csv, txt, xlsx, or ods file.   

Once you add your file or text, you’ll have a chance to review it and decide if you want to apply our AI functionality to improve the text or information.

It happens to ALL flashcard authors: what makes sense to us might not be as salient or clear to others. We miss silly typos. We even occasionally get something wrong. It happens. But your users are the single greatest source of feedback you have. You should be listening to them!

The Edit Suggestion Dashboard will help you do that. (See below for more information about HOW to find this.)

What if you don’t see any edits suggestions there yet?

Tell your learners how to suggest edits! Sometimes people figure it out on their own while others need a little encouragement. Tell them that you welcome feedback, which they can provide by simply clicking or tapping on the pencil () icon in the top right corner of the flashcard they want to suggest a change for.

Also make sure that you’ve deliberately shared the class with your learners, which will give them Full Study permissions (which you can control in the Learners tab of your class).

One final piece of advice: you can always straight-up appoint learners you trust to make direct edits to your content, which’ll save you a lot of time implementing those suggestions yourself.

How to access the Edit Suggestion Dashboard:

Our Edit Suggestion Dashboard is available to Admins (creators of a class) and soon for Editors. You can access this dashboard in one of two places: from the Options menu on the Dashboard, or from your Learners Tab. (see below examples)

Essentially, you are provided a few choices when creating your cards, and after selecting ‘Summarize from Content’, you’ll be able to select the format your current study materials are in: File, Image, or use the Camera to take a picture. Once you’ve done that the tool will analyze the file/image, and provide you with a chance to take a look before you add the flashcards to your deck. Read more here.

We are happy to announce that we’ve released a new feature on our mobile platform that allows advanced import functionality and incorporates AI into the process.  

When creating a new deck, you will now have an option to either Import or Paste cards along with the existing Type Flashcads functionality.  Essentially, we now allow the user to cut and paste questions and answer text--or import a file that can be used to make flashcards.  This is all a free new feature available to everyone for the classes where they are the owner.  We also incorporate an aspect of AI that wil fix or improve formatting if necessary and allow everyone to try it out for free.

You may have read our earlier post about the release of new metrics screen that provides you with additional tools to help boost your awesome motivational habits. You can access this screen from your dashboard, by clicking the “graph” icon to the right of your dashboard stats. This will take you to 'Your Metrics' screen that further builds out your: Performance metrics, Persistence metrics, and Creation metrics.

We’re thrilled to announce that the latest mobile app update (released January 17th) includes the long-awaited DARK MODE functionality!

Assuming you’ve turned dark mode on in your phone device settings, then you’ll notice this on your Brainscape app when you are in STUDY mode--based on the times and functionality you chose in your device settings.

We look to expand this functionality beyond Study in the future.

We want our mobile users to be able to enjoy easy access our free resources, including our Brainscape Academy.  This tool helps provide many resources for building strong study habits, as well as resources for our schools and e-learning institutions looking to share Brainscape with their students/audience.  You can now click on the Academy icon (graduation cap) to quickly access these resources from your mobile device.

We have closed a loophole that occasionally caused some 3s, 4s, and 5s to repeat prematurely.

Now, those higher ranked cards won’t repeat until they’re past their minimum “staleness” interval, or until you’ve already seen all remaining new cards in the mix. If you find that 4s and 5s are still repeating sooner than you’d like, it means you’ve probably already seen all the cards that you need to see, and you should probably broaden your study mix to include other Decks or Classes!

Hello everyone! As always, we try to pump out new versions of our mobile app frequently to both make little tweaks / fixes AND to keep adding exciting new functionality. And yesterday we made a new app version available to the world.

One noteworthy new feature is that you can turn on (if you want) a reminder notification to make sure you do not lose your daily streak.

Here's how to activate your daily usage streak reminder.

1. Go to the main so-called 'hamburger' menu on the upper right of your main dashboard. You'll see a new item at the bottom called "notifications."

2. You may click that to read about the new feature and to consider turning it on with a toggle switch.

3. Once it's on, you'll get a reminder sent to your device if you are in danger of your streak ending. If you have no streak or already continued it earlier that day, you will not be bothered

• For those who aren’t sharing classes with an audience (rather just generic Brainscape Pro), important study data can now be presented that might not otherwise be easily viewable via the Learner’s Tab

• For those licensees sharing a BCC with their learners, they can not see info without having to wade through thousands of users in the Leaderboard

• The access code historical data is available per learner

• Evolution of the csv export tool

• You can click on the specific UGC/BCC to get data just for that class if they share multiple courses with their learners (amazing!)

As many longer term users will recall, late last year (2022) we launched a pretty massive upgrade to Brainscape’s website card editor. This upgrade not only moved the user experience forward miles from the old so-called “quick” and “advanced” separate editors we all had been using on web for years, but also added a bunch of new functionality and options such as advanced card fields.

However, one nagging regression for especially a few users on less than stellar internet connections was the time lag experienced when saving cards--or especially images and sounds. For some of you who had grown used to that very old but simple “quick” editor, this was a tough speed regression. 

Late last week, we finally were able to refactor the new technology to bring a great new alacrity to the performance of the editor and home dashboard. No longer will you experience those views of the Brainscape logo slowing you down while things are saving. And we’d like to think that we’ve also cleaned up some of the interface to further simplify and clarify! So make some new cards or edit some of your old ones on the web when you get a chance if you want to check it out. Thanks as always for your feedback and reactions!

A critical part of what makes Brainscape work is our proprietary, customized spaced-repetition system that we call Confidence-Based Repetition (CBR). And while our system has been in place and working for years, we do try to fine-tune it occasionally driven by both data analysis and user feedback. 

This revision, which launched in the mobile app and we will bring to the website too within a month, enhances the blend and timing of repetition on previously rated cards. Users who might notice it most are those who have previously rated some or all of the cards currently selected in their study mix. But yes, we will continue to recommend ADDING MORE TO YOUR STUDY MIX so that you get some interleaving with your spaced repetition as well!

One of the long-awaited changes made recently to the iOS and Android mobile apps was the addition of the so-called “Smart Study” functionality. With it, users may gain the learning benefits of interleaving when they blend several different topics into their study sessions. 

Today’s new mobile app versions now include MUCH easier controls for how you can view and adjust the weighting of different topics in your study session. These new versions also include some pretty darn important back-end updates. React Native is the JavaScript framework we use to build our apps. And we just did a major update of the version of React Native used in the apps. 

This is always a massive near annual undertaking, which requires our engineers and Quality Assurance professionals to do a ton of work.
